- Provide a solution in the simplest form possible to enable easy management
- Provide a scalable switched network solution.
- Adhere to industry standards
- Integrate the solution with current management platforms
- Adhere to the BECTA national education network design guidelines.
- Provide full documentation and justification of the configuration tasks.
Despite the enormity of the project Absolute Networks completed on time and on budget as planned. This was quite an achievement since there were only eight weeks in which to complete the project following approval of the design stage of the network. The eight week timescale involved the installation, testing and obtainment of sign off for the new infrastructure at the college. It also involved the configuration and rolling out of hardware both within the college and also to the students starting the following term.
The Technology - Following standard education network design guidelines VLANS were used to provide security. Absolute Networks then recommended and implemented the following:
- Dual supervisor engines and line-cards to ensure that the core switch has maximum resilience.
- Use of VLAN trunking protocol to simplify the management of the VLAN database over the campus.
- Spanning tree protocol configuration to prevent the creation of bridging loops within a switched infrastructure.
- IP Multicast configuration was implemented to future proof the design and configuration of the network.
- File and Print services provided by the Microsoft Windows 2003 Server Operating System.
- The active infrastructure is Cisco throughout. Allowing a solution to monitor all of the equipment using HP's Insight Manager and ZenWorks.
